Bringing home your new dog

Bringing home a new puppy can be very exciting for first time owners. Not only the pup is going to be an added member of the family, but will also be taking a huge part in the person's life. Bringing home a dog can be a life changing experience, so before taking any decision on bringing home your new pup, make sure you all have agreed to it and are ready to share this responsibility for the rest of your lives.

Before bringing home your dog, make sure you have certain things ready for him/her. If you are bringing home a puppy who is just weaned from its mother, extra amount of love and affection is needed. It is always better to wait till 60 days from its birth before bringing it to your home. The puppies staying with their mothers and feeding from them till 60 days are more healthy since they get the proper nutrients from the mothers. If you are getting a dog who already has been in touch with humans before, then your work will reduce a little.

Before getting a dog, make sure you have certain things beforehand, such as dog food, medicines, a comfortable dog cot, some non-toxic toys and the most important thing, contact number of a good veterinarian. Imagine a situation where the dog is having a difficulty and you being a first time owner of a dog, are unable to understand the situation. In this case, rush to your nearest veterinarian and get your dog treated. Small puppies do tend to urinate and defecate frequently, it is better to start toilet-training them as early as possible. In such case, take your puppy to the location where you want him/her to urinate and defecate, and take him at regular intervals, so that your puppy can understand the purpose. After feeding, it is a must to take it to the location. With passing days, your puppy will understand the meaning and will go on its own. Try not to shout on the little puppy, give him/her some time to understand.

Coming to the diet, if you prefer to give dog food, ask your veterinarian the best food suited for your puppy, you will find the food servings in the packaging as well. Try not to exceed the limit. Some people, out of love and affection, tend to feed them more, because the puppy will always want more, but it will do more harm to the little stomach of the pup. You can provide home-based food as well. Again, check should be put on the serving size. Always remember, small portions and frequent meals are always best for the puppies, so try not to feed it too much. Provide clean drinkable water as well. It should be changed regularly to make sure your puppy does not drink unhygienic water.

Dogs are prone to few deadly diseases which can be fatal to them. As soon you get your puppy home, schedule an appointment with the veterinarian as per your convenience and thoroughly discuss them and get your puppy vaccinated from a registered veterinarian.

Last but not the least, remember, the dog is now a part of your life just like your children. You have a world of your own, but to the dog, you are his whole world. Love him and take care of him.
Wish you a very happy pet-parenting. :)
